Renovation of Stone Terrace House

This completed project was for refurbishment of an historic house adjacent Trieste, Italy, which was very significant during the First World War, when it acted as military billet for men relieving the trenches at the front, on the adjacent Karso. Munitions were found in the building, some still active; the street address is Via del Artiglieri! Planning Constraints and conservation practice, and economy of two academics and their family, meant that changes to the original were kept to a sensitive minimum in the rebuilding of the ruined shell; a strategic addition to the rear included stacked plumbing facilities on three levels and circulation/staircase; this involved a whole new façade which while contemporary, avoiding pastiche but is is also respectful. The family are keen cyclists.
